Plumbing Tips And Tricks You Need To Read

Having plumbing issues in your home can cause disastrous consequences. Here are some ways to prevent problems, as well as steps to take when you do have a plumbing issue.

Avoiding frozen pies is easy if you ensure no area of your house ever falls below freezing and that any pipes which are exposed to such temperatures are protected with insulation. The pipes may freeze if the surrounding temperature drops below freezing. The best result you can hope for from frozen pipes is to be without water until the pipes thaw. At worst, they will burst and you’ll be paying to repair the damage.

If your water pipe freezes, switch on the nearest faucet tap to that pipe so that water can exit when the pipe thaws. This reduces pressure to keep the pipe from bursting, which could prevent a big mess in your home.

Septic Tank

You should have your septic tank pumped once every five years for best performance. This prevents sediment from building up in the tank and causing a backup into your home or causing the failure of the septic system itself. There is a cost to having a company pump out your septic tank. But, a serious backup can cost a lot more if it mean replacing the tank.

If your toilet is clogged, the water level in the toilet is low, and a plunger is not doing the trick, you may be able to resolve the problem by pouring a bucket of warm water into the toilet from waist level or higher. Repeat this procedure if necessary as the water returns back to a lower level.

Every so often, inspect the floor around your toilet and see if it has gone soft. Stand above the toilet with a foot positioned on each side up close to the base. Shift your weight back and forth to detect any weakness or sponginess. It’s important to catch and address floor damage problems as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more expensive the repair will be.

Garbage Disposal Clean

Keep your garbage disposal clean to make sure it lasts for awhile. You can use dish soap, lemon peels, and cherry pits to get your garbage disposal clean and fresh and running well.

Don’t use your toilet as a trash can in order to avoid problems. Never flush paper towels, tissue, diapers, or tampons. These things do not break up correctly and can clog your pipes. Use the least amount of toilet paper you can when you use the toilet, too.

Lint Trap

Keep your dryer’s lint trap clean. By keeping it clean, you can prevent fires and other problems. Be sure you inspect your lint trap for tears or holes that could mean lint is going into your pipes, which can cause clogs and issues.

If you have grout deposits inside your pipes, it is almost impossible for an inexperienced homeowner to fix. With a little effort, you can get some of the grout broken down and on its way down the line. Plastic pipes are more conducive to clearing grout than metal pipes. This usually requires professional people to come in to help you get rid of this problem.

Don’t rely on drain cleaners too much. Compounds that are ingredients in common drain cleaners are quite corrosive and can cause pipe damage if overused. Especially in cases where you have a drain that clogs repeatedly, getting a professional plumber in to examine the situation may be your best option.

Be certain that your toilet does not leak. An easy way to determine this is to add a couple drops of food coloring into the toilet tank. Look at its bowl, then if you spot any colored water within just a few seconds, there’s an issue that must be dealt with soon.

As the winter months encroach on your home, check your outdoor faucets for dripping and leaking. If leaks are detected, it is important to repair them before the temperature drops below freezing. Both plastic and metal pipes are susceptible to bursting when they freeze. Even a small crack will let enough water out to cause some serious damage.

Make it a habit to run your rarely used valves on a regular basis to avoid plumbing problems. Keep them lubricated using penetrating oil. Be sure to turn them periodically to avoid sticking.

Plumbing requires more skill then just an understanding of water. Plumbers are most frequently called upon to repair or clear water lines.
